If you’ve been following our spotlights, you know I’m a big advocate for Joplin for simple notes. But what if you need something more powerful? What if you want to build a “knowledge base” where your notes, databases, and brainstorms are all interconnected?
Most people turn to Obsidian or Notion for this. But today, we’re looking at a newcomer that is faster, lighter, and completely open-source: Lokus.
Obsidian is fantastic, but to get it to do really cool things—like having a “Notion-style” database or a visual whiteboard—you usually have to hunt for, install, and manage dozens of community plugins. This can make the app feel cluttered and slow.
Lokus is a local-first, privacy-focused knowledge engine. It’s designed to be a “ready-to-go” alternative to Obsidian. It takes the best parts of several apps and builds them directly into the core software so you don’t have to spend your Saturday afternoon troubleshooting plugins.
If you are a student, a researcher, or a business owner who feels like your information is scattered across too many apps, Lokus is a great way to consolidate.
Pro Tip: If you already use Obsidian, you can actually point Lokus at your existing folder (your “vault”), and it will work immediately. You don’t even have to move your data to try it out.
