If you’ve been following my Weekly Spotlights, you know I’m a huge advocate for Free and Open Source Software. But this week, I’m taking a slight detour to talk about something that isn’t free, but is absolutely worth the investment: Hytale.
Lately, I’ve been spending my evenings playing Hytale with my daughter. For those who don’t know, it’s a massive sandbox RPG (think Minecraft, but with much deeper combat, beautiful graphics, and a living world).
As a Linux user, I’m used to having to “tinker” to get games to run. Usually, there’s a layer of translation involved (like Proton or Wine) that can eat up performance.
Hytale is different. It features a native Linux launcher and engine. In plain English? That means the developers didn’t treat Linux like an afterthought. They built it to run directly on the hardware. On both my Linux desktop and laptop, it runs flawlessly—smooth frame rates, no crashes, and no headaches.
If you’re looking for a game that’s deep, creative, and—most importantly—properly engineered for modern systems, I can’t recommend Hytale enough.
